Modern Boys Bedrooms - Not another Fire engine!

Writer's picture: Emily @fallowgreyEmily @fallowgrey

I have realised since having a little boy that boys do seem to get the short straw when it comes to design. The focus is often on the girls range whether, it’s pretty dresses or wallpapers boys can quite often get a little over looked and left with quite obvious options.. another fire engine or a dinosaur print! I have to admit that my son does love both these themes but he is only three so i don't mind him wearing the odd logo t shirt that he'll outgrow in six months! However, when it came to decorating his bedroom i was hoping to find something that would last a little longer.

Bedroom Makeover

My son Casper moved out of his little box room and into this room last year, following an urgent room reshuffle to make space for a home office during lockdown. This had been a spare room and there was nothing wrong with the decor but it didn't feel quite right for a then two year old's bedroom.

I had never decorated a boys bedroom before so this felt like the perfect lockdown challenge to keep me occupied. Here are some of the ideas i looked at below before choosing a scheme for his room.

Boys Bedroom Trends

Dark Walls

This is a great look for boys rooms and one that will last as they grow up. Using colours such as navy blue & Dark Green on the walls and then accessorising with bright clashing colours like yellows and reds to add playful accents to the room. Beautiful design here from The Wooden Hill.

The 5th Wall - Decorating the ceiling to add a new dimension to the space with a bold paint colour or wallpaper. These two bold beautiful designs work so well with a simple colour palette of dark green and white with a touch or mustard yellow.

Stripes

You can't go wrong with stripes and these modern stripe designs in monochrome and muted tones by Ferm Living & Sanberg work so well in childrens bedrooms as a simple background which compliments bold accessories and prints and can easily be adapted as your child grows. I also really liked the idea of panelling the lower half of the walls to break up the stripes. I was sold on the stripes!

Thin Lines - Ferm Living
Estelle Wallpaper - Sandberg

I decided to use Estelle wallpaper by @sanberg in Graphite on the walls. The lower half of the walls were panelled and painted Oval Room Blue which is a mid blue/green tone to keep the room feeling a playful and fun.A nod to the 5th Wall trend i decided to paint the ceiling in Oval Room Blue as well.

Finishing Touches

Last but not least the accessories. I love the mustard colour in the print below with this scheme. It really pops against the Oval room blue paint and adds some warmth to the scheme. There are still lots of finishing touches to go in this room along with curtains! I'd love to use a mustard velvet, if i can find the right colour to match!
